The NAP Project will build technical and institutional capacity for the NAP process in Rwanda, advance climate-resilient technologies and practices as well as monitoring, reviewing and knowledge sharing to learn from the NAP process in Rwanda.

By building the technical and institutional capacity, the NAP Project will produce and use climate information to advance the NAP process in Rwanda by developing downscaled catchment-level climate projections for four catchments, undertaking risk assessments for four catchments in Rwanda, refining the National Determined Contributions adaptation plans, and producing training manuals and organizing awareness raising events on the NAP process among many others.

Regarding the climate-resilient technologies and practices the NAP Project will conduct a long-term research programme to address gaps in knowledge required to inform the design of adaptation plans, selection of appropriate measures and funding of the Climate Change Adaptation in Rwanda. It will also implement landscape -level Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) pilot in four selected catchments and build awareness on future climate scenarios, national priorities and investment opportunities related to increasing the climate-resilience of businesses particularly in the District of Nyagatare, Kirehe and Rusizi.

The NAP Project will also promote motoring, review and knowledge sharing to learn from the NAPProcess in Rwanda. This will entail developing a framework to monitor the effectiveness of NAP process, strengthening the technical and institutional capacity in Rwanda to assess the effectiveness of adaptation outcomes in Rwanda, and producing progress reports and communication material on the NAP process.

The NAP Project will improve livelihoods of local communities, plant trees though agroforestry approaches in Rusizi and Kirehe Districts, intercropping and the stabilising of plantation verges with vegetation at the Shagasha Tea Estate (Rusizi district) to enhance the climate-resilience of associated livelihoods against the negative effects of climate change.

It will also demarcate a buffer zone on the banks of the Umuvumba river in Nyagatare District through the restoration of riparian vegetation, reafforest upstream catchment areas and implement silvo-pastoralism to strengthen livestock production and increase forest cover of savannas in Nyagatare District.
