The restoration of Kibumba Wetland marks another significant milestone in Rwanda's commitment to restoring degraded ecosystems while building climate resilience and creating greener, more livable cities.

Implemented under the Kigali Wetlands Restoration Project, the restoration of Kibumba Wetland has transformed a once-degraded ecosystem into a thriving natural landscape that supports biodiversity, enhances flood management, and provides opportunities for recreation and environmental education.

The restored wetland now features an expanded network of ponds designed to temporarily retain stormwater during heavy rainfall, helping to reduce flood risks in surrounding communities. Beyond their critical role in flood control, these ponds also enhance the wetland's scenic beauty and create habitats for aquatic plants and wildlife.

Kibumba Wetland is also being developed as a destination where people can connect with nature. It will offer opportunities for fishing and other recreational activities, providing residents and visitors with a peaceful green space while promoting sustainable use of restored ecosystems.

One of the wetland's unique attractions will be a botanical garden showcasing a variety of indigenous and environmentally significant plant species. The garden will serve as a space for leisure, environmental education, and awareness, allowing visitors to better understand the importance of wetland ecosystems and biodiversity conservation.

The restoration has also strengthened the ecological functions of the wetland by improving water regulation, supporting biodiversity, and enhancing the landscape's ability to withstand the impacts of climate change. Healthy wetlands naturally filter water, recharge groundwater, store carbon, and provide habitats for numerous plant and animal species, making them among the most valuable ecosystems for sustainable development.

Kibumba Wetland forms part of Rwanda's broader efforts to restore degraded wetlands in Kigali to improve environmental quality, strengthen resilience to climate change, and create attractive public spaces that contribute to the well-being of urban communities.

The Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) continues to work with government institutions, development partners, and local communities to ensure that restored wetlands are sustainably managed and protected for current and future generations.
