Rwanda Celebrates World Wetlands Day with Week-Long Awareness Activities

Rwanda joined the rest of the world on 2 February 2025 to mark World Wetlands Day following a week-long series of activities to raise awareness about the critical importance of wetlands protection.

Organized by the Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA), the campaign reached diverse audiences, from local communities to students in schools and universities, as well as the general public through media platforms.

The theme of this year’s World Wetlands Day – Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future – resonated with the global call to action for wetland conservation. REMA, in collaboration with Urunana Development Communications, delivered engaging outreach campaigns that combined education with entertainment. Community events featured live performances and sketches by Urunana, highlighting the value of wetlands and the urgent need to protect them for future generations.

Empowering Youth for Wetlands Protection

Recognizing the pivotal role of youth in environmental conservation, REMA extended its campaign to various educational institutions. Activities were held in high schools, including Groupe Scolaire Rushubi and Gashora Girls Academy in Bugesera District, and Gahini FAWE Girls' School in Kayonza. Students were educated on the importance of wetlands in supporting biodiversity, mitigating climate change, and maintaining water resources.

At the University of Rwanda's College of Education in Kigali, interactive sessions engaged university students, fostering discussions on sustainable practices and encouraging innovative solutions for wetlands preservation. These sessions emphasized the role of wetlands in achieving Rwanda’s broader environmental and development goals.

Community Engagement Through Creative Outreach

The community outreach component of the campaign was especially impactful, with Urunana’s sketches sparking meaningful conversations. By combining storytelling with clear messages about wetlands protection, these performances encouraged individuals to take actionable steps, such as avoiding encroachment on wetlands and adopting sustainable land-use practices.

In addition to in-person activities, REMA leveraged the power of media to amplify its message. A series of live talk shows on radio and television stations featured experts discussing the significance of wetlands and sharing practical advice on their conservation. Social media platforms also carried targeted messages, calling for collective action to protect these vital ecosystems.

The Role of Wetlands in Rwanda’s Sustainability Agenda

Wetlands play a vital role in Rwanda’s ecosystems, serving as natural water reservoirs, flood mitigators, and habitats for diverse species. They are also integral to the livelihoods of many Rwandans, supporting agriculture and fisheries. However, these ecosystems face threats from human activities, including unsustainable farming, urbanization, and pollution.

REMA’s week-long campaign aligns with the government’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental protection. By involving communities, young people, and leveraging media, the initiative underscores the collective responsibility in safeguarding wetlands.

As Rwanda celebrated World Wetlands Day, the message was clear: wetlands are essential for people and the planet. Through awareness campaigns, community engagement, and media outreach, REMA has demonstrated that protecting wetlands is not just an environmental obligation but a pathway to sustainable development.

Rwandans are encouraged to continue the momentum by adopting eco-friendly practices, reporting illegal activities in wetlands, and advocating for policies that prioritize conservation.
