REMA Hosts Two-Day Workshop to Inspire Youth in Waste Valorization
Today, the Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) kicked off a two-day workshop aimed at empowering youth from Technical Higher Learning Institutions (HLIs) with innovative waste management skills. The event, held at REMA’s headquarters, focuses on waste valorization—turning waste into valuable resources—and promoting sustainable solutions to environmental challenges.
Environmental pollution, especially from poor waste management practices, remains a significant threat to public health, wildlife, and ecosystems. This workshop is part of REMA's broader efforts to foster a generation of environmentally conscious leaders committed to sustainable development in Rwanda.
Participants will engage in sessions addressing legal frameworks on environmental protection, the impacts of hazardous waste, and the principles of waste valorization. These topics aim to enhance participants’ understanding of the environmental landscape while inspiring innovative thinking.
Alex Mugabo, SPIU Coordinator at REMA, encouraged participants to actively engage in the workshop, saying, “This is a unique opportunity to learn, share ideas, and contribute to the solution. Waste is not just a problem—it is a resource. By turning waste into something valuable, we can create sustainable solutions that benefit both the environment and the economy. I urge you to take full advantage of this workshop and be part of the change we need.”
A key highlight of the workshop is the development of project proposals centered on waste valorization and the circular economy. Through group activities, brainstorming sessions, and one-on-one guidance from facilitators, participants will draft actionable and impactful proposals, which may attract funding from various stakeholders.
The workshop aligns with the "Supporting a Green Economy - Decoupling Hazardous Waste Generation from Economic Growth" project, implemented by REMA with support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The initiative aims to transform waste into valuable resources, promoting a circular economy that minimizes waste and maximizes resource efficiency.
In addition to gaining valuable insights, participants will network with peers, mentors, and experts in the waste management field. This collaborative environment is essential for fostering innovation and exchanging ideas that can lead to impactful solutions.
The workshop represents a significant step toward empowering Rwanda’s youth to play an active role in environmental sustainability. Through innovative projects and practices in waste valorization and circular economy, these young leaders will contribute to building a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for Rwanda.
The outcomes of this workshop are expected to resonate far beyond its conclusion, laying the foundation for a society committed to environmental responsibility and sustainable growth.
