Race for Clean Air Inspires Action for a Healthier Future for Rwanda

The Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) has hosted the first ever Race for Clean Air on Saturday, 13 September 2025, at Nyandungu Eco-Park. The event brought together students from Kigali Parents School and GS Remera Catholique, families, and communities for a morning dedicated to fitness, fun, and raising awareness about the importance of clean air.

The Race for Clean Air took place as part of Rwanda’s observance of the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies, reflecting the country’s commitment to promoting environmental responsibility. By combining physical activity with education on air quality and sustainable practices, the race encouraged collective responsibility while creating an engaging and enjoyable experience for participants of all ages.

“Today, we are not only running a race; we are running for our future. Clean air is important for all of us. For students, it helps us to concentrate in class and do well in our exams. And it helps our families live healthier lives. My message is simple: every small action you take adds up to a big difference for you, your family, your community, and the future of Rwanda,” said Juliet Kabera, Director General, Rwanda Environment Management Authority.

In her message, she also reminded the participants that the Ministry of Environment, REMA and partners are working hard to make our air cleaner and safer by:

  • Expanding electric buses and motorcycles to reduce pollution from vehicles.
  • Promoting clean cooking solutions in schools and homes so students and families no longer have to breathe dangerous smoke from wood and charcoal.
  • Protecting green spaces like Nyandungu Eco-Park and other wetlands across Kigali, which act like the lungs of Kigali.

The Race for Clean Air was a celebration of environmental stewardship and the pursuit of a healthier, more sustainable future. Participants brought their energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to running together for clean air and blue skies.
