Bakeries step to eliminate plastic bags and single-use plastics

In line with the awareness on the harmful effects of plastic bags and single-use plastics, Rwanda Environment Management Authority held a two-day training workshop, on 6th and 7th  June 2021, for bakery owners.  During this training work, shop they were briefed on the law n° 17/2019 of 10/08/2019 relating to the prohibition of manufacturing, importation, use and sale of plastic carry bags and single-use plastic items.

Didier Kwezi, owner of a bakery company in Musanze said:  “This training workshop was very crucial to us because it allowed us to better understand about this law. We have to strictly follow and respect it and replace plastics with eco-friendly packaging alternatives .

Opening the training workshop, Director General of REMA, Juliet_Kabera explained the impact of use and sale of plastic carry bags and single-use plastic items on health and sustainable development, and called for cooperation in the fight against plastics and single use plastics

“By your packaging experience, you can collaborate to provide a lasting solution to the worthy material packaging alternatives. REMA and other concerned institutions will always provide the needed support” said Juliet Kabera.

After the workshop, bakery owners  pledged to step in the right direction of not using single-use plastics any more. They have decided to work together in their association and eliminate plastics and single use plastics
