Activities for Transforming Nyandungu Wetland into an Eco-Tourism Park on Track

The Minister of environment Dr. Vincent Biruta has commended the good progress over the implementation of the project of turning Nyandungu wetland located in the city of Kigali into an urban recreation and eco-tourism Park.

Transformation of Nyangungu wetland into an eco-tourism park is part of Rwanda’s effort towards achieving green economy through ensuring of sustainable management of natural resources.
The minister commended the efforts last Friday after conducting a field visit at the site to assess the progress so far made over the implementation of the Nyandungu eco-tourism project which will restore the wetland that has previously been degraded.

The minister, together with the management and staff of Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA), also contributed to the plantation of trees within the park, which will constitute a beautiful landscape of native tree species to provide an attractive and recreation environment for tourists, residents and surrounding community.

The project will reduce flood risks, preserve biodiversity, manage pollution, create green jobs and raise awareness on wetland conservation, while at the same time promoting diversification of tourism products and services.
Upon completion, the park will have will have recreation and sports grounds, fish ponds, botanical gardens, as well as walking and cycling trails to facilitate visitor access to different parts of the park.

The project so far provided job opportunities for over 170 local citizens including women and youth mostly with limited financial incomes. Upon completion, it will also create other green jobs and opportunities either for park management and freelance nature guiding among others.
Nyandungu eco-tourim Park is a pilot project providing sustainable solutions for alleviating environment degradation mostly caused by the current speedy pace of human development and poor management of wetlands combined with climate change effects.
