Rwanda has been selected by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) as the host country for World Environment Day 2010 which will be held on 5th June 2010. The selection of Rwanda by UNEP is a testament to the country's commitment to environmental and sustainability issues.
Rwanda is thus privileged to host internationally, World Environment Day 2010 under the theme "Many species,One Planet, One Future". It will be celebrated in conjunction with the celebration of the annual Kwita Izina Ceremony.
Kwita Izina means giving names to new born gorillas. It is the uniquely Rwandan event which was introduced in 2005 with the aim of creating awareness for the conservation of the endangered mountain Gorillas.
As a country that has been in the forefront of environmental management and gorilla conservation we heartily welcome the proclamation of the International Year of the Biodiversity as it creates an opportunity for Rwanda to showcase our achievements in environmental management and sustainable development efforts.
