Get Involved ! At Home

Change your lifestyle and protect the environment.

Here are some useful tips which don’t require altering your daily routine much and not only are environmental friendly but could save you time and money!

- Use public transport, walk or cycle where possible.

- - Save energy by installing low energy light bulbs, turning hot water thermostats down and insulating your hot water tank.

- Save water by thinking carefully about your water use in the home and changing some water-wasting habits. Some examples:

· Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth

· Fix dripping taps and put a displacement device like a "Hippo" in your toilet cistern

· Use a bowl of water to wash fruit and vegetables rather than under a running tap and the leftover water can be used for watering house plants.

· Use the minimum amount of water required when you boil water in sauce pans and kettles; that way, you'll save energy as well as water.

- Install an energy saving stove

- Don’t charge your mobile phone batteries the whole night.

- Segregate your household wastes, try to reuse some old items and use organic waste for compost.

- Grow your own food in the garden and backyard.

 

 

Get Involved ! At school

As a student or as school manager.

- Watch your energy and use alternative source of energy:

o Turn off your monitors and computers off at the end of the day

o Have windows open in hot weather instead of air conditioning.

o Open your curtains instead of switch on lights during the day.

o Install a biomass facility if you have a boarding school

o Install a rain water harvesting system for cleaning water

- Reduce and reuse

o Use both sides of paper whenever possible when printing and photocopying

o Consider the adoption of recycled paper and use old paper for students activities.

- Green up & clean up.

o Arrange a special 'green up & clean up' event at your school to clear up litter locally

and improve open spaces.They can be fun

Grow your own.

As a school grow your own organic food in gardens.

- Put in place an Environmental Policy and an environmental club

o Find out whether your school already has a policy in place and whether it is being adhered to.

o Have a suggestions box for the school, so you can get a feel for what everyone may think the company is doing right or things they think might need changing

o Organize a Green Scheme award at your school which rewards students for their environmental actions.

Here are just a few tips that may help to reduce your company's environmental impact

- Watch your energy:

 

o Turn off your monitors and computers off at the end of the day.

o Have windows open in hot weather instead of air conditioning.

o Open your curtains instead of switch on lights during the day.

- Reduce and reuse :

o Use both sides of paper whenever possible when printing and photocopying

o Consider the environment and the filing before printing documents.

o Use scrap paper as often as possible for instance making your own notepad by putting pieces of paper together.

o Use your company’s newsletters, emails, intranet or notice boards to communicate instead of printing memos or letters to all your staff members… Think also to communicate verbally, it can be an occasion to exercise.

o Consider the adoption of recycled paper

o Use old envelopes for internal mail.

- Tackle your Business Travel

o Use video conferencing wherever possible,

o When organizing meetings consider using public transport (hired buses) to reach the meeting venue instead of using your own cars.

o Get employees to car share.

- Put in place an Environmental Policy

o Find out whether your company already has a policy in place and whether it is being adhered to.

o Have a suggestions box for the office, so you can get a feel for what everyone may think.

o Create a scheme which rewards staff for their environmental actions, this is something everyone can aim towards, like

performance targets.

o Consider the adoption of a green procurement policy for your company.

While building your own house, design your house taking into account energy and water saving devices.

- Get free energy and free water

 

o Make your own free electricity and hot water by installing green energy equipment such as a solar panel or a mini wind turbine.

 

o Find out how you can reuse grey water and rainwater for garden watering and toilet flushing

Our decisions as consumers can directly affect our improvement and these little actions can help in improving our environment.

 

- Buy eco-friendly products such washing-up liquid and clothes detergent :

Bio-friendly detergents are free of phosphates, chlorine, petroleum chemicals and a variety of other harmful ingredients that can seep back into the environment. Such detergents are widely available and cost on average the same price as non-bio-friendly ones.

- Buy recycled and environmentally friendly products where possible. This will assist in reducing the amount of waste that goes into landfill sites.

- Bulk-buy and avoid throw away items. It is much cheaper and reduces packaging.

- Consider water and energy efficiency when buying domestic appliances.

- Use eco-friendly packaging materials and re-usable shopping bags.

Buy what you need and avoid impulsive shopping.

Walking or cycling helps to reduce carbon dioxide pollution and is a good form of physical activity !

- Some figures suggest that planting 15 small tree saplings will soak up 1 tonne of carbon dioxide as they grow over their lifetime (100 years)

- Swapping a normal 100 watt light bulb with a 20 watt energy saving light bulb will save around 270 grammes of carbon dioxide over its lifetime (8 years) but will produce the same amount of light

- Installing a solar electricity panel on your roof will save 8 tonnes (8,000,000 grammes) of carbon dioxide over its lifetime

- Installing a roof-top mini wind turbine will save around 1 tonne (1,000,000 grammes) of carbon dioxide per year or 20 tonnes over its lifetime.

- Bio-friendly detergents are free of phosphates, chlorine, petroleum chemicals and a variety of other harmful ingredients that can seep back into the environment

- Recycling a drink can requires only 5% of the energy it takes to make new aluminium – just one recycled aluminium can saves enough energy to run a television set for three hour

- A 5-minute shower uses about a third of the water of a bath. But remember that power showers can use more water than a bath in less than 5 minutes.
