Lake Victoria Basin Celebration Day PDF Print E-mail

26th November was celebrated for the first time “the Lake Victoria basin day”. This day was marked by the visit of authorities who have protecting Environment in their responsibilities.

The Minister of State in charge of Environment and Mines delegated the team. The visit was made in a forest in Mayange Sector planted some years ago by the population in partnership with local NGOs.

After that forest became population property. An area of nearly 15 hectares is covered by trees. The Minister of State in charge of Environment and Mines urged the population of Mayange to fill empty spaces by planting trees, they were also asked to not transform this forest into pasturage.

Launch of the “ Economics of Climate Change in Rwanda” report Kigali – 25 November 2009. PDF Print E-mail

On 25th November the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) presented the final report on the economic impacts of Climate Change in Rwanda study.

This was requested by the Government of Rwanda. The UK Department for International Development (DFID) funded the study which was carried out in collaboration with the Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) along with a range of other national partners has been going on for the past 12 months and the final report has been submitted.

The study aims to provide policy makers within the government, private sector, development partners and civil society with information that will facilitate the development of national policy and strategy on climate change.

The study found that climate change adaptation strategic actions could cost in excess of $500 million per year by 2030 and that Rwanda will need to build its capacity now in order to effectively deal with adaptation needs in the future.

Carbon Market Workshop - REMA / CDM PDF Print E-mail

23th November 2009, The Rwanda Environment Management Authority “REMA" hosted a workshop on the carbon market. Public and private institutions were represented. They exchanged ideas about air pollution, climate change and sectors that can generate projects with low carbon emissions.

The Director General of Rwanda Environment Management Authority Dr. Rose Mukankomeje said they take the opportunity to require private entrepreneurs to take advantage of opportunities available to Rwanda to set up projects and generating revenue that will help world to purify the air as the intensification of forests, production of electricity from methane gas, the use of biogas, water purification, waste recycling ....

REMA adopts Nyarurama primary school as a model for environmental friendliness in schools PDF Print E-mail

KIGALI- KICUKIRO -On November 16th began the National tree week that was concluded on 21/11/2009.

 

Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) engaged in activities that aimed at following up on the trees that were planted at KIMISANGE hill last year. Activities included clearing shrubs and pruning the trees to allow them growth.

After working on the trees already planted, REMA staff joined the local population of Kicukiro District, in Nyarurama cell and planted over 4000 trees.

Tuesday 17th November UNESCO and REMA held a work shop on integrating MAB “Man and

Biosphere” in other Environment and development program.

What is MAB Programme ?

The UNESCO Programme on Man and the Biosphere, MAB in short, is an international scientific cooperation programme dealing with interactions between man and environment in an entire range of bio-climatic and bio-geographical situations of the Biosphere. It at the same time resorts to natural sciences, social sciences as well as other areas within UNESCO’s jurisdiction, among which those of education, communication and culture, with a view to ensuring the conservation and sustainable utilisation of biological diversity.
