The Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) has been mandated to represent the Government of Rwanda (GoR) as Designated National Authority (DNA) headed for promotion of Clean Development Mechanism projects under Kyoto Protocol able to reduce green house gases (GHG) emissions. The DNA Permanent Secretariat through REMA received funds from UNEP Risoe for further carbon market capacity building. The funds intend to build capacity of the Rwanda DNA Permanent Secretariat and train project developers in Carbon Market Projects’ development in sustainable way. However, to succeed in Carbon Market we need skilled technical staff. Within this in mind, REMA has decided to offer a three month term internship to 2 graduates from Electrical Engineering and Finance related studies (one from each field), which will be entitled:" Carbon Market Internship". The trainees will be working hand in hand with CDM-DNA Project in collaboration of other programs within REMA, especially Climate Change Department.

Subjects to be learnt:

  1. Introduction to Kyoto Protocol and Carbon Market
  2. Introduction to Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) Project Cycle
  3. Introduction to Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM)
  4. Applicability of Methodology
  5. Identification of Baseline and Description of how the Project will reduce GHG emissions
  6. Additionality-Barrier Analysis
  7. Additionality – Investment Analysis
  8. Emission Reduction Calculations and Data Sources
  9. Grid Emission Factor calculations
  10. Development of CDM Project Information Note (PIN) and Project Design Document (PDD).

Tasks:

Reporting to DNA CDM Project Manager, the trainees will be in charge of:

  1. Completing all reading works on Carbon Market given and work on assigned papers.
  2. Assist in offering workshop training organized by DNA Permanent Secretariat
  3. Identifying international investors in carbon market who can potentially invest in forestry, renewable energy production and energy efficiency in Rwanda
  4. Conducting relevant survey on carbon market feasibility in Rwanda
  5. Identifying and encouraging both potential public and private Rwanda economic operators who can pick interest in carbon market,
  6. Facilitating links between carbon credits buyers and Rwanda investors and other contacts that may be useful for Carbon Market Projects increase in Rwanda,
  7. Assessing if the implementation of both voluntary market and CDM projects are in compliance with the Sustainable Criteria and Procedures from Rwanda DNA,
  8. Developing an executive summary for policy and decision makers based on findings from Carbon Market related projects’ implementation in Rwanda,
  9. Developing communication tools for the general public,
  10. Preparing a monthly report,

Duration

3 months commencing from the day of contract ratification.

Renewable Energy Development

  • Be a Rwandan by nationality
  • Under 30 years old
  • Excellent knowledge in both written and spoken English

 

1.       Assist project developers  in  green house gas (GHG) emission reduction Calculations;

2.       Collect necessary data regarding electricity production and consumption;

3.       Facilitate Grid Emission Factor calculations and its validation

4.       Prepare a monthly report,

 

 

Expected Outputs:

At the end of the program, interns will have a thorough understanding of the issues involved in developing a carbon market project and will have finalized a draft PDD.
