Carbon Market in Rwanda– preventing climate change while earning extra revenue, Musanze 21 June 2011

Rwanda Environment Management Authority (REMA) which stands as Rwanda Designated National Authority (DNA) for Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), a market based approach under Kyoto Protocol organised a two days workshop entitled “Media Workshop Training on Clean Development Mechanism Projects in Rwanda scheduled from 20th to 21st of June 2011 in Musanze Northern Province. About49 journalists from the public and independent Media Houses attended the workshop that aimed at building capacity of media houses on CDM and Carbon Market and raising public awareness on progress of CDM projects in Rwanda for proper report. The first day of workshop was allocated to training on climate change and climate change mitigation, CDM projects in Rwanda and presentations on CDM projects case studies made byprojects developers include:

  1. Manna Energy Ltd that developed “Rwanda natural Energy”,
  2.  ENODOM and Atmosfair which developed “Save 80% Cook Stove” and distributed through a project entitled: Improved Cook Stoves Program for Rwanda.
  3. Nuru Lighting Project Rwanda which developed the “energy Saving lamps for rural area”.

The second day was allocated to field visits where journalists visited:

1)      EWSA MUSANZE station “Compact fluorescent lamp distribution project”,

2)       Nuru Lighting Project-Rwanda at Nyamata and 

3)      Rwanda Natural Project at FAWE girl school.

The second day was honored by closing remarks given by Dr. Rose MUKANKOMEJE, Director General of REMA where recommendations were presented at Top Tower Hotel. . She thanked the participants for their availability during two days and requested them to actively participate in the public awareness on projects that are environmentally friendly with capacity of reducing Greenhouse Gases (GHG). She stressed the cleanliness of every sector and reminded journalists the strength they have to inform the masses and sought to exploit this power in writing and by any other media channel.



"I was very surprised to discover how the CDM projects are feasible. I was impressed by the" Save 80 % Cook Stove distribution project, my contribution will be to enhance the knowledge of Rwandans regarding CDM projects, "said Mr Andre Gakwaya from the Grand Lac Hebdo news paper”.
